Teaching My Children

S. Judges 2:10-11 After that whole generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation grew up, who knew neither the LORD nor what he had done for Israel. 11 Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD and served the Baals.

O. This passage jumped out at me. The main thing is the cause and effect relationship. The new generation didn’t know the Lord or what He had done for them, and as a result, they cared nothing for Him and worshiped other gods. The older generation failed to do their job of passing along the history and love of God to their children, and as a result, there was a falling-out. It’s important that as a parent I pass on to my child(ren someday) a love of God and an understanding of who He is and what He has done for every one of us.

A. My daughter is still too young to understand much, but it’s never too early to start thinking about how I can lead her in her relationship with God. I want her to be able to look at my life and what I’ve told her and not to see huge disparities.

P. God, I want my life to reflect your love for us, and my love for my family to reflect your love for them. Guide me in the decisions that I make and help me to lead my children to a relationship with you.

What do you do with your children to help lead them toward Christ?

  1. These are just the little things, but with kids 6 and under, the repetition is great. :)

With my two oldest girls, when they slept in the crib, I sang a series of songs to them : Jesus Loves Me, Jesus Loves the Little Children & Praise Him (Praise Him, All you little children).
With my youngest, I just sing Jesus Loves Me.
At this same age, I would tell them "Mommy loves you, Daddy loves you, but best of all, Jesus loves you!" as I was carrying them to bed.

We also read a "Bible Story" (or two or three) each night before they go to bed.

  2. Right On, Andrew. Whenever I can I like to remind my adult children and grandchildren of God's love and faithfulness of how he has worked in our lives and family. I long and pray that my children and grandchildren will live their faith and pass it on to the next generation, telling of His wonders and greatness.
